Ingredients

  1. 1 tbsp (15 mL) vegetable oil
  2. 1/2 cup (125 mL) finely chopped onion
  3. 4 large garlic cloves, minced
  4. 1 cup (250 mL) ketchup
  5. 3/4 cup (175 mL) water
  6. 1/4 cup (50 mL) peanut butter
  7. 1/4 cup (50 mL) lemon juice
  8. 2 tbsp (30 mL) each hoisin sauce, honey and chili powder
  9. 1/2 tsp (2 mL) salt
  10. 1/4 tsp (1 mL) cayenne pepper

Steps

  1. Heat oil in a large saucepan (as mixture spatters) over medium heat. Add onion and sauté until soft, about 3 minutes. Add garlic and cook 1 minute. Add ketchup, water, peanut butter, lemon juice, hoisin, honey and seasonings.
  2. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer uncovered, stirring occasionally and more near the end of cooking to blend flavours and thicken slightly, about 5 minutes. Ideal for ribs, burgers or chicken.
