Italian Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

  1. 3 tbsp (45 mL) olive oil  
  2. 1 onion, chopped  
  3. 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped  
  4. 1 lb (450 g) ground beef  
  5. 1 green pepper, chopped  
  6. 1 carrot, grated  
  7. 3 stalks celery, finely sliced  
  8. 1 can (10 oz; 325 mL) cream of tomato  
  9. 1 can (19 oz; 600 mL) tomato juice  
  10. 1 can (28 oz; 825 mL) diced tomatoes  
  11. 1 can (5-1/2 oz; 150 mL) tomato paste  
  12. 1/2 bottle Chili ketchup (a large one)  
  13. 1 tsp (5 mL) brown sugar  
  14. Salt, pepper, crushed hot pepper flakes to taste  
  15. 2 bay leaves  
  16. 1-1/2 cups (375 mL) water

Steps

  1. In a tall heavy saucepan, heat the oil and brown the onion and garlic.
  2. Add the meat. Cook well.
  3. Add the vegetables.
  4. Add the remaining ingredients.
  5. Cover halfway and let simmer for 3 hours. Stir often.
