Basil Tomato Gratin

Ingredients
- 3/8 cup (85 g) butter
- 2 large onions, cut in rings and separated
- 10 large tomatoes, cut in thin slices
- 2 tbsp (8 g) chopped fresh basil or 2 tsp (3 g) dried basil
- 6 turns of a pepper mill
- 1 tsp (5 g) salt
- 1 tsp (5 g) sugar
- 1 cup (about 85 g) bread crumbs
Steps
- Preheat oven to 400 F (200 C).
- Grease a pyrex gratin dish with 1 tbsp (15 g) butter.
- Melt 2 tbsp (30 g) butter in a saucepan and cook the onions for 10 minutes until softened, but not golden.
- In the gratin dish, arrange a layer of onions. Sprinkle with basil.
- Cover with a layer of tomato slices and sprinkle with pepper, salt and sugar.
- Sprinkle with bits of butter.
- Repeat the layers until all of the ingredients are used.
- Finish with the bread crumbs and bits of butter.
- Cook in 400 F (200 C) oven for 30 minutes. Serve hot.
