Banquet Burgers

Real Cheddar cheese and crispy bacon (add extra if you like) make this traditionally Canadian diner-style burger taste even better at home.

Ingredients

  1. 1 egg
  2. 2 tbsp (25 mL) water
  3. 1/4 cup (50 mL) dry bread crumbs
  4. 1 small onion, grated
  5. 1 tbsp (15 mL) Dijon mustard
  6. 1 clove garlic, minced
  7. 1/2 tsp (2 mL) each salt and pepper
  8. 1 lb (500 g) lean ground beef
  9. 4 slices Cheddar cheese
  10. 4 slices cooked bacon

Steps

  1. In large bowl, beat egg with water; stir in bread crumbs, grated onion, Dijon mustard, garlic, salt and pepper. Add beef; mix just until combined. Shape into four 3/4-inch (2 cm) thick patties. (Make-ahead: Layer between waxed paper in airtight container and refrigerate for up to 24 hours or freeze for up to 1 month. Thaw in refrigerator.)
  2. Place on greased grill over medium heat; close lid and grill, turning once, until digital thermometer inserted sideways into centre reads 160°F (71°C), about 15 minutes.
  3. Top each burger with cheese and bacon; grill until cheese melts, about 5 minutes.
